Summary: TIMELINE is a project that traces the origin of the existence of national visual art. The opportunity afforded by the time call, namely to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the National Art Gallery (NAG) this year, is definitely much anticipated. Time in the context of this project should be regarded as a push-pull factor for the guest curators and art historians to construct meanings of the accounts of the development of visual art which is not a mere direct imitation of the theory of art evolution espoused by Western historians. Comprehensive efforts by curators, specialists and intellectuals are presented in narrating the national visual art collection in six phases or chapters: Prehistory, Navigational and Trading Empire, Illustrated Letters, Malayan Beauty, Contemporary and Iconic Works, and New Ideas.
